When staying in self-catering accommodation in the Algarve, don't worry because food shopping is just as easy here as it is for you at home.

There are supermarkets and 'mini-mercados' everywhere, and in larger resorts you'll find several big supermarkets to choose from, as well as lots of little supermarkets and local grocery shops which stock all the daily staples and more.

Whilst we try to promote local delicacies if you really miss those everyday foods from home, again don't worry because you can find most of them in the Algarve as well... even the smaller supermarkets keep very good ranges of familiar brands: baked beans, bacon, sausages, jams and marmalades, even frozen English sliced bread is imported, (but it would be a shame not to try the delicious fresh locally baked breads).

The Supermarkets in Burgau and the surrounding towns can cater for your every need however, should you prefer to visit food markets where locals shop there are a number of options, we have listed the Markets & Supermarkets we feel it is worth telling you about, although most towns have a supermarket and some form of local Market.

(Note: fishermen generally do not go out on Sunday night, so fish markets tend to be closed on Mondays):

Local Markets

Lagos Main Market:  Located next to the main taxi rank in Lagos, this large 3 storey building has daily fish/meat market stalls on the ground floor, fruit/veg on the first floor and a cafe/restaurant on the top floor.  It is a fascinating place to go for a look, prices are comparable to most supermarkets.

Lagos Saturday Market: Located next to Lagos' bus terminal, this really is where the locals go!  Be there before 11am (some stands start to close up shortly after) and you will find the cheapest and tastiest fruit & veg around.  It is grown and sold by locals and should not be missed.

Burgau Market:  Most days there is a very small market near Burgau's bus stop.  Fish, fruit and clothes are sold on various days throughout the week, be there by 10am to make sure you catch them.

Vila do Bispo: This daily market is a lot larger than Burgau's but nothing compared to the Lagos markets.  Fresh Fish, meat, fruit & veg are sold here, and it is cheaper than supermarkets (no fish on Mondays as the Fishermen don't go out on Sundays)

Supermarkets (Non Burgau options are 10-20 mins away by car)

In Burgau: There are two small, but normally well stocked, supermarkets in Burgau which sell most day to day food/drink items that you need.

Intermarche (15 mins from Burgau by car): On your way into Lagos, this large supermarket has everything from clothes, food and some electricals.

Lidl & Aldi: Located near to each other in Lagos, these supermarkets are very good value for money, but are nothing like as large as the Intermarche.

EcoMarche: Similar in size to the Aldi/Lidl supermarkets, but with a greater range of products (has Deli counters like Intermarche). This is normally the only supermarket open on a Sunday.

Modello & Pingo Doce: Larger than EcoMarche/Aldi/Lidl, again with a greater range of products.
